Arthur Symons: At Dieppe

At Dieppe
The grey-green stretch of sandy grass,
Indefinetely desolate ;
A sea of lead, a sky of slate ;
Already autumn in the air, alas !
One stark monotony of stone,
The long hotel, acutely white,
Against the after-sunset light
Whithers grey-green, and takes the grass’s tone.
Whithers grey-green, and takes the grass’s tone.
Listless and endless it outlies,
And means, too you and me, no more
And means, too you and me, no more
Than any pebble on the shore,
Or this indifferent moment as it dies.

Bei Dieppe
Grau-grün gestreckt,
sandiges Gras,
unsagbar
trostlos : See aus Blei,
Himmel aus
Schiefer, so als sei
schon
Herbst hier in der Luft––alas!
Eintönigkeit,
gestimmt auf Stein,
weiß
abgesetzt nur das Hotel,
längst
sank die Sonne, und ihr Hell
verwittert, grau-grün spielt das Gras hinein.
verwittert, grau-grün spielt das Gras hinein.
Lustlos
und endlos––steht und liegt
und ist für dich und mich nicht mehr
und ist für dich und mich nicht mehr
als jeder
Kieselstein es wär
oder der
Augenblick, nun er verfliegt.
