Jerome Rothenberg: Die Lorca-Variationen (XXVII) - Sechs Lieder bei Anbruch der Nacht

Memo/Essay > Memo

"After translating Lorca's series of poems "The Suites" I began to compose a series of poems of my own (“variations”) that draw systematically on vocabulary, especially nouns and adjectives, from my translations of the Suites, but rearrange them in a variety of ways. The methods used resemble chance operations but with a margin of flexibility, with total freedom in the case of verbs and adverbs, with occasional addresses to Lorca himself imbedded in them. The result isn’t translation or imitation in any narrow sense, but yet another way of making poetry – and for me at least, a way of coming full circle into a discovery that began with Lorca and for which he has stood with certain others as a guide and constant fellow-traveler."

Six Songs at Nightfall

6/22. Arrived back in Granada, feeling a little wild & lonely. Earth was funny (white) today ... nightingales, trees, whatever else we looked at. A bell was sounding from a distant shore, horizon alight with pale green sunrays. The soul sets off now in its drunken boat, the fishermen dig underground like moles. I watch them dangle fish from fishhooks, each with a brunette in his heart ... a fresh green willow to haul in the fish ... a drum to call the soul back. Every time the sun goes down it’s nightfall, & every time the moon drops in the pond, the lianas & the cypresses turn silver. We endure with sorrows old as dreams ... as shadowy as mist. Forsaken, solitary in the dark, I write Six Songs at Nightfall .

Sechs Lieder bei Anbruch der Nacht
